Gift of Tissue Gives Young Father Miracle Recovery

Gunnar Gentry | Bone Recipient

Gunnar Gentry is a nurse, a father of three, and a man who cherishes the simple moments. He spends time with his family in Georgia, walks hand in hand with his children, and shows up for the moments that matter most.

But his ability to live that life was once uncertain. Several years ago, while still in nursing school, Gunnar was involved in a devastating motorcycle accident when he was struck by a drunk driver. His injuries were severe and life threatening. In the hours and days that followed, his care team worked to save not only his life, but also his leg, an outcome that was far from guaranteed.

He underwent multiple surgeries and spent months in recovery, facing both physical and emotional challenges. Even after leaving the hospital, healing remained uncertain. His femur would not properly heal, and despite multiple procedures, his body struggled to rebuild what had been lost.

That is when tissue donation became part of his journey. During a later surgery, Gunnar received a donated cellular bone graft, ViviGen®, an allograft that provided the three bone healing properties that his body needed to heal.

That gift made the difference. With the support of his care team and the healing potential of donated tissue, Gunnar’s leg was finally able to recover. Today, he walks pain free, something that once felt out of reach.

For Gunnar, healing is not just about recovery. It is about restoration. It is about being present for his children, returning to the profession he loves, and living a life that once hung in the balance. Tissue donation played a critical role in making that possible.

When given the opportunity to write to his donor family*, Gunnar struggled to find words that could fully express his gratitude.

“The hardest decision can sometimes have the greatest impact,” he shared. “I don’t think there is anything I could say to them. It was an action that changed my life. It would take more than words to repay a kindness like that.”

Instead, he honors that gift through how he lives, caring for others as a nurse, showing up for his family, and making the most of the second chance he was given.

Gunnar’s story is a powerful reminder that tissue donation is not just about saving lives, it is about restoring them. It enables healing where it might not otherwise be possible, helping patients return to the people, moments, and lives that matter most.

* The Thanks2You program is an initiative by LifeNet Health that allows tissue recipients to express their gratitude to the families of their donors. Through heartfelt letters, recipients can share how the gift of donation has impacted their lives, providing healing, mobility, and a renewed sense of hope. The program serves as a bridge between donor families and recipients, offering a way to honor the generosity of donors while giving families a sense of comfort in knowing their loved one’s gift made a difference.
