Dianne is a retired operating room nurse, a mother of three daughters, a grandmother, and a newlywed. After decades spent caring for others in the surgical suite, she never expected to one day be the patient.
In the fall of 2021, Dianne was diagnosed with breast cancer. Drawing on her clinical experience, she carefully reviewed her options with her surgical oncologist and chose to undergo a double mastectomy with reconstruction. Having assisted in many reconstructive procedures throughout her career, she understood both the complexity and the importance of the process. What she did not expect was how personal that knowledge would become.
Her surgery was successful, followed by a steady recovery. Despite a few setbacks, she gradually returned to the routines that define her independence, from daily activities to light strength training. Within a few months, she was back to doing the things she loves.
Behind that recovery was a powerful and often unseen gift.
As both a healthcare professional and now a recipient, Dianne understands the profound role donation plays in healing. She has long been a registered donor and has made a point to have clear conversations with her family about her wishes. Now, her perspective carries even greater meaning.
“It’s very important,” she said. “I have been on the other side where people have not had those conversations, and that is very hard.” Dianne speaks openly about donation whenever she can, driven by both professional insight and personal gratitude. She knows firsthand the care, respect, and precision that go into the recovery process, and she also understands the trust required from donor families. That trust is not something she takes lightly.
Today, Dianne carries forward not only her own strength, but also the generosity of someone she will never meet. Because of that decision, she was able to heal, to return to her life, and to continue making memories with her family.
For Dianne, donation is not just a medical process. It is a deep human act of compassion that transforms loss into possibility and gives others the chance to move forward.
