Transplant Services (OPO)_OLD

LifeNet Health Transplant Services Division is a leading, federally designated Organ Procurement Organization that coordinates the recovery and transplant of organs in Virginia and part of West Virginia, offers a comprehensive program of bereavement support for donor families, and educates the public about donation.

  • Donation and transplantation saves lives. There is a critical shortage of organs in Virginia and nationwide. Three Virginians die each week waiting for a life-saving organ transplant that doesn't come in time.
  • One Donor can save 9 lives through organ donation and enhance more than 50 lives through tissue donation.
  • Nearly 100,000 people are currently awaiting an organ transplant in the U.S.; more than 2,500 of those are in Virginia.
  • On average, 18 men, women, and children die each day waiting for a life-saving organ transplant in the U.S.
  • There were more than 28,000 transplants in the U.S. last year, and more then 700 of those were in Virginia.

LifeNet Health Guiding Principles

We believe, as a leader in the field of organ and tissue donation and transplantation, our responsibility is to protect the integrity of the donation process. The ever-increasing need for our services demand personal dedication and commitment to innovation and excellence. It is through our service to donors, donor families, transplant recipients, the community, and each other that we achieve our mission.

We are a community of individuals with a common purpose: to serve others by being good stewards of a precious gift offered to those in need. We value those who give, offering mothers the chance to live life to its fullest through organ and tissue transplantation. We act in a responsible and prudent manner to educate the public about donation and its endless possibilites: to carry out a donor's wish for donation, and to seek new opportunities so that a donor's wish provides fulfillment of life for others, all of which require unending commitment to our mission.

Service Areas

LifeNet Health provides organ recovery services for the greater Virginia area, and as the federally designated Organ Procurement Organization, serves a population of approximately 5.2 million people and over 80 hospitals.  LifeNet Health works closely with hospital staff to create donation systems within their institutions in an effort to streamline the donation process and increase donation. LifeNet Health respects a person's right to decide about the organ and tissue donation opportunity and, to this end, honors the wishes of the individual. Transplant coordinators are available 24 hours a day, as needed for any questions that family members may have regarding their loved one's decision.  LifeNet Health's donor families are given special care by a staff of donor family advocates providing programming to guide them through the grieving process.
