Andy Gil, just 22, touched countless lives through his compassion and dedication. Born and raised in Miami, Florida, he was the eldest of five in a close-knit Hispanic family with Cuban roots. As a first-generation American and the first in his family to attend college, Andy inspired his siblings and community. In May 2023, he proudly graduated from the University of Florida with a degree in Psychology. A true Gator, he excelled both academically and as a leader, serving as president of Alpha Epsilon Delta (AED), a pre-health honor society. His leadership and positive spirit left a lasting mark on those around him.
Beyond academics, Andy’s energy shone on the field as the keeper for the UF Quidditch team. His dedication mirrored how he lived—giving his all and uplifting others. After college, he worked as a manager at a Gainesville restaurant, known for his strong work ethic and kindness. His wide smile, which could light up a room, symbolized his caring nature. To his mother, Aymara, he was a son whose love and warmth were unmatched, and to his siblings, a role model they admired.
On February 29, 2024, tragedy struck when Andy’s life was cut short in a hit-and-run accident in Gainesville. The sudden loss devastated his loved ones, but even in their grief, Andy’s spirit continued to give. On her way to Gainesville, Aymara received a call from LifeNet Health confirming Andy’s location and presenting the chance to honor his wish to be a donor. Saying yes was easy; it aligned with his lifelong values of helping and giving.
To date, Andy’s gift has impacted six lives, a testament to his caring nature. The community’s outpouring of support was immense: a GoFundMe page for his funeral raised over $31,000, showcasing the deep connections he made in his brief life.
A remembrance wall in Aymara’s home, adorned with the Donor Medal and memories of Andy, stands as a testament to his impact. Friends and family, often wearing teal—his favorite color—gather to celebrate the light Andy brought into the world.
Andy’s story is one of hope and inspiration, reminding us that true influence is not measured in years but in the lives we touch. His legacy continues through those he loved and the lives he changed through his selfless act of donation.
