Impact of donation highlighted by retired local police officer who is among the longest-living heart recipients

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (April 1, 2019) — Lt. Pat Tauro, a retired Norfolk police officer, knows firsthand about the gift of organ, eye and tissue donation. More than three decades ago, the stress of his job and a family history of health challenges left him with a failing heart. He received a second chance at life in early 1986. It was the final, selfless gift of a 19-year-old athlete who died in a motorcycle accident.

This National Donor Day, Learn More About Tissue Donation and Help Save Lives

By Jeff Leuschen

When people are asked about registering to donate, they often think of organ donation. Many don’t know what tissue donation is or that it is just as life-changing. As a firefighter, I know the impact of tissue donation firsthand. When a tragedy such as a death occurs, first responders like me know we must work quickly and carefully on scene to ensure people’s wishes to donate are honored. But recently, I became the one in need of a life-saving gift.

As one of 58 federally designated Organ Procurement Organizations (OPOs), LifeNet Health coordinates organ donation throughout most of Virginia and part of West Virginia. The increase in transplants stems from growing participation in Virginia’s donor registry, which includes more than 4 million adults, as well as effective collaboration between LifeNet Health and transplant centers across the commonwealth.

LifeNet Health Reminds Virginians that the DMV Makes a Difference Every Day by Adding Hearts to Licenses

If you are a registered organ, eye and tissue donor, chances are great that you became one when you visited your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Adding the heart to your license is something that more than 140 million Americans made the decision to do when they became registered donors at the DMV. As a show of thanks for these efforts, this year organ and tissue organizations across the country celebrate Sept. 24-28 as National DMV Appreciation Week.
