Steven Lawrence Newton

His mother Gaynell Joyce Jordan Newton did the patchwork done on Steven’s square. We chose a sports theme because Steve loved sports from the time he was 7 years old he started playing football, he played all the way through high school.

At age 8 Steve started playing baseball, and he played baseball and softball up until the time he was killed. He also played basketball for his church, Cradock Baptist.

Steve was on the wrestling team in high school. He graduated from Cradock High School and went into the airforce for 2 years. While he was stationed in Michigan he learned to snow ski. Steve was even considering going into sports medicine as a career. Steve was very active in sports. He was only 36 years old at the time of his death. He was so full of life. Throughout out marriage of 11 1/2 years, he always played sports. Steve played AAA baseball for the White Socks. He was their pitcher. His death was a great loss to the team. They dedicated the following season to him by wearing a patch on their left sleeve with his initials and his number, number 1. They also retired that number so no one else could use it.

Steve took time also to try to teach his son Steven Austin to play ball. They were always playing together. I cannot remember too many days that they did not wrestle in our living room or play catch in front of our house. Sometimes we all would wrestle together.

Steve is missed and loved very much, knowing part of him lives on in others is a great help. We will always love you Steve.
